Korra twists this well-worn conclusion in a few very important ways, the most obvious of which is that the hero is actually a heroine. Just before the credits roll, we see Korra and her longtime friend Asami hold hands and lock eyes in a long, intimate gaze. As others have pointed out, this scene evokes the final moments of of The Last Airbender , in which the series' main couple shares a smooch.

Over the course of four seasons, The Legend of Korra found plenty of opportunities to spin romance amid its overarching story of saving the world. But as the series went on, fans began to root for the show's titular heroine Korra not to end up with dashing dude Mako. Instead, a deep love blossomed between Korra and Asami. Shippers went wild for "Korrasami" and began creating fan art and fan fiction, imagining a world where the two would end up together. The show ended, but not their story. In the comic, Korra's parents are happy about her relationship with Asami.

The two had more chemistry than either did with Mako, and there were certain scenes between the women I thought might be hinting at something more, but dismissed as me reading into things.

The series' final scene, indicating the beginning of a romantic relationship between Asami and the female lead character, Korra , was unprecedented in its representation of LGBT persons in western children's television. Unlike many characters in the world of The Legend of Korra , Asami is not able to "bend", or manipulate, one of the elements of water , earth , fire or air.
